Founded in 1992 by eminent scholars—Michel Freyssenet (EHESS, Sociology), Robert Boyer (CNRS, Economics), and Patrick Fridenson (EHESS, History)—GERPISA (Permanent Group for the Study of the Automobile Industry and its Employees) emerged as an international social science network to challenge the universal applicability of the Toyota Model. It pioneers research on the diversity of automakers’ trajectories across institutional contexts, covering innovation cultures, labor relations, and value chain dynamics.

In 2008, GERPISA evolved into a French Scientific Interest Group (GIS) under economist Bernard Jullien (University of Bordeaux), establishing a unique academic-policy-industry nexus:

Government Backing: Supported by key French ministries (Economy and Finance , Ecological Transition);

Industry Integration: Partnered with CCFA (French Automobile Manufacturers’ Committee) and FIEV (French Federation of Vehicle Equipment Industries);

Academic Excellence: Anchored by ENS Paris-Saclay(École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay)and CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research).

GERPISA's academic evolution has undergone two major phases: In the 1990s, its foundational work challenged the "universality of the Toyota model," proposing the "diversity of productive models" framework to analyze how national institutions, corporate strategies, and labor relations shape the automotive industry. After becoming a French Scientific Interest Group (GIS) in 2008, it expanded its focus from traditional automaking to electrification, digitalization, and new mobility ecosystems, building a transnational interdisciplinary network (economics-sociology-political geography). Its research now directly informs EU and French automotive policies, reflecting GERPISA’s shift from critical theory to policy-industry engagement—solidifying its global authority in automotive research.
