On May 18th, 2023, Prof. Isabelle HUAULT, Executive President and Dean of emlyon business school arrived in Beijing from Lyon, visited Beijing Sport University and signed a cooperation MOU together. The two schools engaged in a deep conversation on the possibility of establishing joint degree and non-degree programs.

Remarks by Mr. ZHANG Jian, President of Beijing Sport University

emlyon business school is very famous and prestigious in the world and Beijing Sport University (BSU) is the only sport university under the General Administration of Sport of China, also involved in the domestic double first-class project. Founded in 1953, this year marks its 70th Anniversary. Since the founding of our university, we have cultivated more than 10,000 talents in sports and related industries by the experts, coaches and athletes in different areas. Beijing Sport University has played an important role in the overall development of sports and economy in China, the Olympic Games is an accurate example of what have been achieved.

I strongly believe that our two schools have great potential and broad prospect in diverse sports + business areas. I personally worked in the General Administration of sport of China and used to have marketing related professional experiences, therefore I am very interested in higher education and business schools in general.

Thank you very much for welcoming us, we had the opportunity to visit a part of the campus, including the Tennis Hall and the Champion Road with the footprints of important figures in the history of sports. We are very impressed by the huge campus and its infrastructures of high quality. So, thank you and congratulations for this wonderful and prestigious learning environment.

emlyon business school is very proud and honored to hold long-term partnership with prestigious Chinese partners like Beijing Sport University to develop our international research and deepen the Sino French relationship in the field of education, business and sports. We have held many events together in the past in cross-disciplinary research with a focus on the Center for the Eurasian Sport Industry (CESI), such as the Eurasian Sport Industry Conference, student exchanges, and today we are signing this symbolic MOU to strengthen the boundaries between our two schools. We already organized three annual Eurasian Sport Industry Conference on the topic of “A New Frontier – The Business and Management of Sport in Eurasia”, “Staging and Evaluating Sport Mega-Events” and “Embracing Legacy Value of Mega Events in Challenging Times”. We are going as well to host together the 4th Annual Conference in September 2023 and plan the 5th Conference to be held in Paris or Lyon.

As internationalization is one of our fundamental strategic pillars in our "Confluence 2025" strategy, it is important for us to promote international exchange of students, faculty members and cooperation between different programs.

Another important axis of our strategy is hybridization, to hybridize sports in general, sports industries and values, management and business is very important because it illustrates the ambition of emlyon business school regarding academic, research and innovation excellence through cross-disciplinary education.

Furthermore, academic and research excellence, which nurtures each other.

Therefore, we would like to further consolidate and deepen the long-term partnership between emlyon business school and Beijing Sport University. We also warmly welcome you to come visit the new Agora Campus in Lyon, Gerland.

There are some potential projects that I would like to discuss about with all of you: First, the implementation of program cooperation with careful curriculum design and development. Then the exchange between French and Chinese students through our MSc in Sports Industry Management program. Furthermore, elaborate a real double degree program together targeting renowned global ranking in the field of Master of Sports which will be beneficial to academic influence, student recruitment and branding for the two schools. Finally, consolidate the academia-research-industry framework, we have in our master programs and research an important module focusing on lifestyle which includes sports, hospitality, health management, which could all be areas to enhance cooperation.

Open Discussion Session

In the open discussion session, Prof. LI Shengxin, Vice Dean of the School of Management of Beijing Sport University suggested that emlyon business school could consider the partner school as an alternative institution where to organize academic lectures and conferences as it innately possesses an audience of students, teachers, researchers and professionals that are deeply involved or interested in the sports industry.

Ms. ZHU Xiaolan, Director of the Office of Scientific Research and Anti-Doping Affairs of Beijing Sport University, suggested deeper scientific cooperation, declare international joint research projects and enhance communication between researchers of both sides, in the field sports equipment operations during sports events, for example.

Ms. WU Jun, Acting Director of the Office for International Exchange and Cooperation of Beijing Sport University emphasizes that Beijing Sport University is now a comprehensive university, with a total of 25 schools with science, engineering, humanities and arts, sports related majors, which open to more possibilities of cross-disciplinary cooperation together.

Mr. Nicolas PEJOUT, Executive Board Member, Head of Strategy & Development of emlyon business school, stated that although sport is our common interest, but we should not only focus on sports. Business, health, environment are also important fields to be considered altogether. This “global sport university”, “global management university” DNA so to say is very likely our shared characteristics. Sports and management both has a strong focus in soft skills such as team management, leadership, mental strength, perseverance and so on that are needed to become a qualified manager, sportsman or sportswoman.

Finally the two schools signed the MOU together, exchanged symbolic gifts and took a group photo. The Signing Ceremony marked a brand-new start for the long-term cooperation between emlyon business school and Beijing Sport University.
